It is told of a Sufi who was in his khalwa in a cave in the mountains calling on Allah and calling on Allah, and suddenly there appeared before him a ravenous, slavering, savage wolf with its tongue hanging out, about to attack him.

He drew his sword and cut its head off. When he cut its head off, the creature became twice as big, so he cut its head off again and it became a monster!

Then he understood. He said, ‘I seek protection in Allah from myself’ and he turned his back on it and it vanished. Then he began his inward journey to Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala….
